BBC History Magazine celebrates its 300th issue with a special edition featuring bumper 300 question quiz
Monday 29 January, 2024
Britain’s bestselling history magazine has joined forces with historians including Tracy Borman, Michael Wood and James Holland for the anniversary quiz challenge, celebrating the breadth and diversity of history.
BBC History Magazine’s February issue (out now) marks the 300th issue of the bestselling history magazine in Britain. The magazine is celebrating the landmark by asking historians to pose a series of quiz questions with categories covering everything from television and radio (David Hendy) to medieval animals (Hannah Skoda).
Since BBC History Magazine launched in 2000, well-known names including Monica Ali, Fergal Keane, Bernadine Evaristo, Sir Keir Starmer, Dame Vera Lynn and Boris Johnson have nominated their History Heroes, and the magazine has regularly made headlines including in 2013 when its readers voted David Bowie “The best-dressed Briton in history”.
Editor of BBC History Magazine, Rob Attar, says: “History is often quite a weighty subject, but we thought we’d celebrate our 300th issue with something a little more fun. Our enormously entertaining quiz has been set by some of our favourite historians and we hope our readers enjoy tackling it as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

We’re delighted to have reached our 300th issue with the magazine still going strong, and now part of a hugely successful multi-channel brand. It’s testament to the enduring popularity of history, our highly talented and hard-working team, and of course our tens of thousands of loyal readers.”
The February issue of BBC History Magazine also has a new regular feature, highlighting surprising facts about popular historical topics, beginning with the Regency. This new feature accompanies the brand’s online HistoryExtra Academy, which brings a different short course from a historian each month and is free to BBC History Magazine subscribers.
