Horticultural Sub Editor (up to £40,000)

About the role

The Horticultural Sub-Editor is responsible for all sub-editing and horticultural factchecking of content across Gardeners' World platforms (print, web, social, podcast, video and more).

Reporting to the Head of Multimedia Operations, you will work alongside all GW platform leads, content creators and brand colleagues to ensure GW content is horticulturally, grammatically, factually and legally correct — ready for publication and suitable for its intended platform and audience.

As Horticultural Sub-Editor – BBC Gardeners' World you will:

  • Sub-edit editorial content across all media (print, web, newsletters and social), ensuring it is:
    • Horticulturally accurate and suitable for the home gardener, with correct botanical and common plant names in line with current naming conventions
    • Grammatically, factually and legally correct
    • Consistent with the GW house style and tone of voice
    • Ready for publication in line with platform-specific needs, including headlines, metadata and accessibility standards (such as alt text) for digital content
  • Sub-edit marketing and commercial content with the same degree of accuracy
  • Work on files in InDesign and the gardenersworld.com CMS, using Monday.com to record and track the progress of your work
  • Check audio and visual content for horticultural accuracy as required
  • Assist with technical horticultural queries from the GW team as needed
  • Help maintain and develop the GW horticultural style guide and terminology
  • Complete work to deadlines set by the Head of Multimedia Operations
  • Champion the value of high-quality subbing and horticultural accuracy across the brand team, helping reduce recurring errors at source
  • Comply with BBC Editorial Guidelines and BBC Magazines Commercial Guidelines

Requirements

  • Horticultural qualification, or equivalent demonstrable expertise
  • Proven experience of sub-editing editorial content across multiple platforms
  • Proven experience of bringing print pages to completion in InDesign
  • Experience of using a CMS to sub-edit digital and newsletter content
  • Familiarity with workflow tools such as Monday.com
  • Excellent attention to detail in all you do
  • Experience of juggling multiple deadlines and workflows
  • Good working knowledge of media and defamation law
